Yesterday we celebrated three years the Lord has blessed us to serve him together as pastor and people at the Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church.
What a church!!!
Either time flies by or I am getting older. Or both.
Wednesday evening, Pastor George Hurtt of the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church of Los Angeles was our guest speaker. He kicked off the celebration in a great way with a message from Psalm 23:2.
Yesterday, our guest was Pastor Romell Williams, who leads the Lilydale Baptist Church in Chicago. He preached from Matthew 20:1-16 and 1 Corinthians 2:1-5. They were both solid messages.
It was good to have a Sunday off from preaching. The bow that is always bent will inevitably break.
My daughter, Natalie, led a song with the children choir during our 10:15 service. If she would have sung another verse, I would have completely fallen apart .
Maurice Griffin was our guest soloist this weekend. He did an excellent job, as usual.
I was greatly encouraged by every expression of love, kindness and support the members of Shiloh showed my and my family. I am blessed to serve a great people. I am grateful for the privilege and thankful for the all the Lord is doing in us and through us.
In the afternoon, our choir was in full concert. It was a moving time of worship and praise.
I even sang a little with the choir!
I am scheduled to preach today at the Southern Baptist Convention of Texas that is meeting in Irving (Dallas) this week.
I missed my flight last night. And, of course, it was the last flight of the evening.
Crystal found me an early morning flight to Dallas, while I slept.
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…”
Please pray for me as I minister the word today.
Speaking of Dallas, the Cowboys put a whippin’ on the Buffalo Bills 44-7.
The Jags defeated the hapless Colts 17-3.
Saturday, the USC Trojans beat down the Washington Huskies 40-17.
I slept through the Pacquiao-Marquez fight Saturday night. From all reports, I did not miss anything.

Notes from Sunday - 10/24/10
CRYSTAL UPDATE: Thanks for your ongoing prayers for Crystal. She still cannot move around much. But there have been no complications from her surgery. And her recovery is coming along as scheduled. Praise God.
Good day of worship at Shiloh yesterday.
Our youth and young adults led the music yesterday. Good job.
Thankful for all of our guests yesterday.
God bless the families who participated in our parent-child dedication yesterday.
I began a new series on the Epistle of James yesterday. I preached from James 1:1-4 and called the message, “Taking Advantage of your Trials.”
I have been looking forward to preaching the book of James for many years now. I hope to learn a lot from it. And I pray that my labors will bear fruit in the pulpit.
I had been working on an introductory sermon on James. I decided Thursday evening that was not the best way to go. So I had to bunker down to do an exegesis of verses 1-4. It wiped me God. But I am glad I did.
I am really looking forward to the study of James and pray that it will mark a special time of growth and fruitfulness in the life of Shiloh.
Next week’s sermon: “Praying for Wisdom” (James 1:1-4).
Praise God for those who were saved and added to the church.
Sunday afternoon, I preached for my friend Brodes Perry at the Philippi Baptist Church here in Jacksonville. Brodes is a godly young pastor and a faithful preacher. I was glad to be there. I preached Romans 8:28. Thanks, Shiloh, for your presence. You’re the best.
I did not realize it until Brodes mentioned it to me, but yesterday was the third straight Sunday afternoon I have preached.
Congratulations to my friend, John Fils-Aime, on his pastoral installation yesterday in New York.
The San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers are going to the World Series It should be absolutely boring without the New York Yankees.
It seems no one wants to be #1 in college football. But who cares, since the USC Trojans are nowhere near the top.
I am not a UFC fan. But I was absolutely shocked by the news that Brock Lesner was knocked-out in the first round of his match Saturday night.
The Jaguars were beat up pretty bad by the Chiefs.
My Dallas Cowboys MUST defeat the New York Giants tonight! Are you ready for some football!!!
Can you believe the movie "Back To the Future" is 25 years old?
How’s Lido! Lido, our family dog, got a haircut this weekend. He is feeling good and looking good.

Notes from Sunday - 10/10/10
Good day of worship and fellowship at Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church.
Grateful for all the guests who joined us in worship.
Our children's choir led in song during our 10 AM service.
Our mass choir looks beautiful in their new robes.
Carlton Burgess led the song of preparation at 10 AM. His medley of old hymns was moving.
Praise God for those who were baptized.
I preached a message from Hebrews 10:24-25 that I entitled "Assembly required."
I argued that Christian assembly is required for all Christians.
I am very passionate about this subject. I believe that growing Christians much be participant members of a local church.

In two weeks, I plan begin a verse-by-verse exposition of the Epistle of James. Please pray for my preparation.
Saturday afternoon we worshiped with the Abyssinia Baptist Church to celebrate the 13th pastoral celebration of Dr. Eugene Diamond.
I am a sucker for a church that loves its pastor!
I preached from one of my favorite verses, Galatians 6:9. I needed that message more than anyone else.
The Jaguars beat up the Bills 36-26. That's two in a row for the Jags. 3-2 for the season.
My Dallas Cowboys lost to the Titans 34-27 to go 1-3 for the season. It seems like the only way my boys will make it to the Super Bowl is to get free passes. At Cowboy Stadium!!!
The USC Trojans lost to Stanford 37-35. Well, at least we do not have to worry about going to a bowl game this season.

Notes from Sunday - 08/08/10
We had a good day of worship and fellowship today at the Shiloh Church.
Praise God for those who were baptized in worship today.
Our children’s choir led in musical praise today. As always, it was encouraging to have the little ones participating in worship today.
It was really cool to meet some of the guests who were in worship today. It is great that the members are inviting their family and friends to church with them.
Our choir sung “But God” today from Ron Winans Family & Friends IV. I really love this song. And it was a great blessing to hear it today. I was tempted to get a piece of it when I stood up to preach, but my better judgment prevailed. I had work to do.
I continued my brief series on the book of Ruth today with a message on Ruth 2 that I entitled “Nothing Just Happens!”
I’ll let you in on a little secret: I needed that sermon that I preached today more than anyone else!
This is the second week in a row that I have struggled to organize the text for preaching. Late last night, I wrestled with two different ways to preach the text. I am glad the Lord led me to preach it the way I did.
I had a lot of text and a limited amount of time. It was a challenge. But I really enjoyed preaching this message today. What a mighty God we serve!
I read a statement years ago that has really stuck with it: “The Bible is filled with stories about people. Let them live.” The more time I spend studying the stories of the Bible, the more I am learning to appreciate the rich theology embedded within biblical narratives.
I cannot wait to get to chapter 3.
I am thinking about and praying for a family that suffered a tragedy this weekend.
Praise God for those who were added to the church today!
Crystal cooked dinner today. It is rare for her to cook on Sundays. It was a rare treat! We “fared sumptuously”!
The Dallas Cowboys are playing the Cincinnati Bengals in a pre-season game this evening. It is still in the first quarter as I write, but you already know my prediction. Cowboys win!!!
In the morning, I am scheduled to fly to London to participate in The Proclaimer’s Place preaching seminar under the leadership of Dr. Joel Gregory. Pray for my travels and that my skills as a student of the word and preacher will be sharpened.

Notes from Sunday - 07/18/10
It was a good day of worship and fellowship at Shiloh Church today.
We sang, “Here I am to Worship,” today. This song is really growing on me.
We had quite a few guests in worship today. Way cool.
I am thankful for all of our volunteers for their service. You make it happen!
Praise God for those who were baptized today. One of our pastors had the privilege of baptizing his two daughters today.
I really had a good time teaching our new members class today, so much so that I did not finish my lesson today.
I sat on the floor today. All was going well until a little girl named Hailey confronted me. Apparently, I look like her dad or something. She jumped on my lap and would not leave. Her mother finally had to come get her so that I could preach. Last I heard, security escorted the little girl from the auditorium.
I prefer to sit on the floor. Definitely.
Today I concluded my series on the Ten Commandments with a message on Exodus 20:17 entitled, “Overcoming Covetousness.”
I think I had a good understanding of the text. I wish, however, that my message had been better. I don’t think I was as clear I wanted to be. Praise God for blessing his Word in spite of the weakness of the messenger.
I really enjoyed preaching through the 10 Commandments. And I am really glad this series is over. It was hard work.

I have a free Sunday next Sunday before I get to my next series. I need to determine what I will preach next week. Fast.
We ate soul food for lunch after church. I give you one guess where were ate.
This evening, a beloved deacon of Shiloh, Charles Brown, went home to be with the Lord. Please remember his wife, family, and our congregation, in your prayers.

Notes from Sunday - 07/11/10
Praise God for a blessed day of worship at the Shiloh Church today!
I am grateful for all of our guests in worship today.
I have been away from home preaching all week. It was great to be home to worship with and minister to my own congregation this morning.
The musical praise was exceptional today. I am grateful for our music team. Thanks for your service today.
I rejoice with all who were baptized today to express their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is very encouraging to be a witness to this important step of faith today.
It was tough preaching today after being at a preaching conference all week long. I have been reminded this week of how far I have to go as a preacher. May the Lord help me to continue to grow as a Christian and pastor-teacher.
Today I continued my series on the Ten Commandments with a message on Exodus 20:16 entitled, “Tell The Truth.” I argued that God commands us to be people of truth who (1) tell the truth about God, (2) tell the truth about ourselves, and (3) tell the truth about God.
A little boy came up to me after church and told me what he learned from the message today, “Do not lie!” I think he was listening.
God willing, I will conclude this series with a message on Exodus 20:17 entitled, “Overcoming Covetousness.”
Praise God for all who were saved and added to the church in our services today.
A big “shout out” to our security team for the service today. Thanks guys!
I received the news this evening that Dr. WIllie Smith, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego, went home to be with the Lord Saturday. Please remember his family and congregation in your prayers.
I also received news that Walter Hawkins passed away today. Please remember his family and congregation in your prayers.

Notes for Sunday - Independence Day Weekend 2010
Happy Independence Day weekend!
It is a great blessing to live in the United States of America, with all of the liberties we enjoy. Thank God for those who have given their lives and continue to stand in harms way for our freedom.
Because it was the 4th of July, we adjusted our worship schedule. All Bible Study Fellowship groups were cancelled. And we only held one worship service – at 9 AM.
For the record, attendance was much better than I thought it was going to be.
I am praying for all the members of Shiloh who are traveling over the holiday. May the Lord put a hedge of protection around you and grant you to come and go in safety.
I am grateful for all the guests who were present in worship with us yesterday.

Thank you to our deacons and deaconess for your service in and for our celebration of Communion.

After church, I did absolutely nothing. It was wonderful!

Notes from Sunday - 2/28/10
Today was Ministry Emphasis Day 2010 at Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church.
Our worship services today were meant to challenge the church to get plugged into a place of Christian service. There was also a ministry fair to give our members an opportunity to learn more about our ministries and to get involved.
Our theme for today was “Get Plugged In.” I planned to say this to members I greeted today. However, many of the members I chatted with today were people I recognized to be already serving in some area of ministry. Praise God! And may their tribe increase!
Thanks to all our ministry leaders and teams for being on your post today. You make it happen. And I thank God for you.
I media team prepared a video that featured some of the members and ministries who are actively involved in the body life of the church. Thanks, guys, for your service.
As always, I was grateful and glad for all of the guests who were in worship with us this morning.
Our Youth Choir and Young Adult Ensemble led the musical praise today. They did a great job. I am greatly encouraged by their progress under the leadership of Reggie Bass.
The youth choir sung “I Belong to God” this morning. This is an “old school” gospel song that the youth choir used to sing when I was in it years ago. (I am getting old!)
I preached from 1 Peter 4:10-11 today. I labeled the message, “Serve One Another.’ My goal was simply to explain the priority of Christian service and challenge the membership to serve one another.
My sermon was actually the third message I selected for this morning. The first half of the week I worked on a passage from the Gospel of John. The second half of the week I worked on a message from Message. I finally landed on a message from 1 Peter. Go figure.
I was preoccupied with the clock today, for some reason.
Next Sunday’s Sermon: “The Cost of Discipleship” (Luke 9:57-62).

Many of the members were still rejoicing today from the ministry of the word this past Wednesday by Dr. John R. Adolph of the Antioch Baptist Church of Beaumont, TX. The entire Wednesdays in the Word series was a great blessing!
The kids had a late night last night, hanging out with the men of Shiloh at the Monster Truck Show. Apparently, Monster Trucks are a big theme here in Jacksonville. The football arena was sold out. Thanks P. Wesley for letting the kids tag along.
While I was typing these notes, George Hurtt sent me a text that he was having dinner with John Piper – Yes, that John Piper – who spoke to at Mt. Sinai this evening. I am officially a hater tonight!!!

Notes from the first Sunday in 2010
Happy New Year!
It was a beautiful day. But it was cold. No. It was cooooooold! The weather guy called it “deceptive sunshine.” He explained, “You will look outside and see the sunshine. But when you go outside, you will feel the cold.” He was right. I am glad the saints pressed on to worship anyway.
The Lord smiled on our first Lord’s Day worship services in 2010 at Shiloh yesterday.
I resumed teaching my New Members Class yesterday. It was good to be with our new members and to discuss with them the good news of Jesus Christ.
I thank the Lord for his protection of my flock over the holidays. It was good to see many who were traveling had made it home safely. And I pray God’s blessings on those who were visiting here and are on their way back home or to school.
I am grateful for all of the guests who were in worship with us this past Sunday.
I had the privilege of leading the congregation in our hymn for the morning. It is a joy to lead God’s people in musical praise.
For the first time, we celebrated the Lord’s Table in both of Sunday morning worship services. A big shout-out to our Deacons and Deaconess for their service to our congregation!
Likewise, we shifted our celebration of the Lord’s Supper to earlier in the service, rather than the end of it. I hope that this change will help us to put a greater emphasis on the significance of the Supper and not feel as pressured to rush through it at the end of the service.
The choir sang one of my favorite gospel hymns before the message: “Oh, To Be Kept By Jesus.” That’s my prayer.
I continued my series through Philippians. I preached, “Have Your Learned to be Content?” from Philippians 4:10-13.
It was one of the Sundays when I never felt that I really got in the rhythm in either one of the sermon presentations. Thank God for using me in spite of me.
Praise God for all those who were saved and added to the church yesterday.
It is my plan that January 10-17 will be Prayer Emphasis week at Shiloh. And it is my intention to begin this week of prayer emphasis with a message on Ephesians 1:15-19 – “Praying to Know God Better.”
The Dallas Cowboys stomped the Philadelphia Eagles 24-0 to win the Division Title.
The Jacksonville Jaguars lost to the Cleveland Browns and were eliminated from playoff contention. Maybe next year.
I cannot believe that Sunday was the last day of the NFL regular season. It went by so fast. At least we still have the playoffs. And we will have the privilege of watching the Cowboys in the Super Bowl!

Notes from the Last Sunday in 2009
Today was the last Sunday of the 2009. God has been faithful. And it was a joy to be in worship again with the saints of Shiloh.
We only had one service today at Shiloh. We met at 9 AM. I do not know if the change of time threw some people off or whether people were out because of the holiday. Regardless, I am grateful for all of the members and guests that pressed their way to worship today.
Our young adult ensemble led the musical praise this morning under the leadership of Reginald Bass. I am grateful and encouraged by the service.
I continued my series of Philippians today with a message from Philippians 4:8-9 that I entitled, “Practicing the Presence of God.”
Praise God for those who were saved and added to the church today.
During the invitation, I began to sing, “Lord Keep Me Day By Day.” This song has been in my system for about two weeks. It has been my daily as I end the year and face 2010. Thanks Lance for resurrecting this song for me more than a year ago. Remember?
Thanks K.B. for praying for me this morning. I was desperate. The assurance of your prayers was a great encouragement.
It’s official. I have preached every Sunday in 2010. I preached away from home twice – one Sunday in Los Angeles and one in Chicago. I am have been in my own pulpit every other Sunday. This is not a good thing. I need to take period breaks to care for my own soul and keep my mind fresh. But I am humbled with gratitude for the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord in helping me to carry out my assignment.
Next Sunday’s Sermon: “Have You Learned to be Content?” (Philippians 4:10-13)
If all goes according to schedule, I should be finished with the book of Philippians at the end of January. It has been a fruitful study for me. I hope and pray that it will bear fruit in the life of SMBC to the glory of God.
May the Lord richly bless the ministry and fellowship of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in 2010!
The Dallas cowboys put the smack down on their archrivals, the Washington Redskins. We are headed in the playoffs!!!
The Jaguars were beat down today by the Patriots.
There are now no more undefeated teams in the NFL. I can’t believe that the Indianapolis Colts pulled their starters early and chose not to pursue a perfect season.

Notes from Sunday - 12/20/09
It was a cold but beautiful day in Jacksonville and a warm day of worship at Shiloh.
As always, I am grateful for the guests who joined us in worship today.
Our choir really lifted us in worship today. I am grateful for their ministry.
I preached a message today from Philippians 4:6-7 that I entitled “God’s Answer for Your Anxiety.”
Here is God’s answer for your anxieties: Pray your worries away! Don’t worry. Pray. Turn your worries into prayers. Take everything off of your worry list and put it on your prayer list. Bring all of your worries – one by one – to God in prayer.
I was absolutely confident that this was a message for my congregation. But I think I needed the message more than anyone else.
Shiloh is such a wonderful place to preach each week. What a church!

Notes from Sunday - 12/13/09
Let me begin with a note from Saturday. On December 12, my wife and I celebrated our eleventh wedding anniversary. How time flies! I am unspeakably grateful for the precious gift the Lord has given me in Crystal. She has been a consistent channel of the love and grace of God in my life. And our relationship has been both a God-given means and motivation for sanctification. I married way out of my league. And being married to Crystal inspires me to keep striving to be a better man. I love her. I thank God for our marriage and all of its attending blessings. And I pray the Lord will give us many more blessed years - no, decades - together. Proverbs 18:22!
Early Sunday morning, I checked the weather report for the day (something I rarely ever do). The forecast predicted that it would rain all day long. It rained all day Saturday. So I assumed it was a fair guess that it would do the same Sunday. Wrong! As the day went on, the rain stopped, the clouds passed over, and it ended up being a beautiful, sunny day here in Jacksonville.
Our children's choir participated in our worship service and blessed us with their service, as always.
I thank God for all the guests who were with us in worship.
In our 10 AM service, I led the congregation in singing, "Father, I Stretch My Hands to Thee." This is one of my favorite prayer hymns. I enjoyed leading the congregation is singing praise to God.
I preached a message from Philippians 4:4-5 that I entitled, "Don't Let it Stress You Out!"
May the Lord help me in my preaching!
Next Sunday's Message: "God's Answer for Your Anxieties" (Philippians 4:6-7).
Thank God for those who were added to the church today.
Last evening, the worship arts ministries of SMBC were in full concert. Shiloh is blessed to have many gifted and talented people in our music department who love Jesus Christ and are faithful in their service for Christ. Our children's choir, youth choir, young adult choir, men's chorus, praise ensemble, dance teams, and mass choir - along with our wonderful musicians - led us in a time of musical praise in celebration of the birth of Christ the King. I am grateful for the leadership of Roger Sears and very proud of our entire team.
The Dallas Cowboys lost 17-20 at home last night to the San Diego Chargers. I am disappointed. But I am going to cheer our team to victory this weekend over the undefeated New Orleans Saints. Yeah, I said it!
The Jacksonville Jaguars, who have been doing well in recent weeks, lost 10-14 at home to the Miami Dolphins.

Notes from Sunday - 11/29/09
We emphasize world missions and local outreach on fifth Sundays at Shiloh. Praise God for those who set aside a gift to share toward our mission and outreach efforts.
A big “shout out” (see, I can be hip, too) to Henry Meyers for sharing with us today about the work of Mission Harvest America.
Our Sunday morning Bible Study Fellowship groups are studying through The Fundamentals of the Faith workbook (produced by Grace Community Church in Southern California and published by Moody). I am encouraged by the reports I am receiving of how our members are learning and growing. 3 John 4.
Our women’s chorus led us in musical praise today. I am grateful to God for their service.
As always, I am grateful for all of the guests who were in worship with us today. It was good to meet Shiloh member relatives who were in town for the holiday.
Praise God for the family that was baptized in our service this morning.
My little sister, Donetta, sang one of my favorite hymns today: “Only What You Do For Christ Will Last.” (Please pray for her as she makes her way home to Oklahoma City this week).
I decided to preach today on Missions. I preached from Psalm 67, which is called “The Missionary Psalm.”
This psalm has had a tremendous impact on my view of missions. Rather than focusing on the needs of men, it focuses on the glory of God. Our devotion to God should move us to strive to reach the nations.
Random testimony: I love the book of Psalms!
I have been struggling with sinus problems the past couple of days. It made it very difficult to preach both times today. It was hard to just talk, which made it hard to concentrate. Thank God for his help. Please pray for me.
I plan to resume my study of Philippians next week with a message on chapter 4, verses 2-3.
Praise God for those who were added to the church today.
No Cowboys today. They took care of business Thursday by beating down the Raiders The Cowboys now lead their division with an 8-3 record.

Notes from Sunday - 11/15/09
Praise God for another Lord’s Day in worship at the Shiloh Baptist Church.
I taught my New Members Class for the first time in two weeks. It was good to be back in the saddle again. Thank Deacon Brinkley for filling in.
The choir sung one of my favorite Thompson Community Singers songs this morning – “I Tried Him And I Know Him.” (Does anyone remember all the great "Tommies" songs that Kim McFarland led?). It was very encouraging.
I continued my study of Philippians today with a message on 3:15-19 that I called, “The Importance of Christian Fellowship.”
I actually spent this week studying Philippians 3:15-16. However, Saturday afternoon my plans changed and I decided to preach verses 15-19. I am glad that I did.
I hope to go back to preached the sermon I prepared on verses 15-16 someday. But I really doubt that it will happen.
Next week’s text: Philippians 3:20-4:1.
Random Bible study note: The Bible was not written in verses and paragraphs. It was written in complete thoughts. The verse-chapter divisions were added centuries later. And they are not Inspired.

The Jaguars pulled one out against the New York Jets today. Interesting decision to down the ball at the one yard line. Good thing they made the field goal.

This past week, we celebrated our first year together as pastor and people at the Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church of Jacksonville.
It is hard to believe that a whole year has past since I was installed as the pastor of SMBC. It really does seem like it was just yesterday. It has been a year in which God has proven himself faithful, as always.
I am grateful, humbled, and overwhelmed by the goodness of God in sending me to such a loving people, who appreciate the word of God, and who are willing to follow leadership, and our eager to reach lost people with the good news of Jesus Christ. The Lord could have sent me to a place where the ministry of the word is "out of season." It is the Lord's mercy that he has given me a people as the wonderful membership of Shiloh.
Our Sunday morning services were a blessed of the Lord. Particularly, the 10 AM service was very special. There were several surprises added to the order of service in celebration of my first pastoral anniversary. I don't like surprises! But these were so encouraging. My heart was so moved with gratitude for all that God has done for us. The Lord has done great things in our midst. And he is worthy to be praised!
Our music department brought their A-game as this lead us in musical praise. As always, it was good to have Genesis (children's) choir participating in our worship. It was also good to hear Ray sing again. Glad he is feeling better.
I preached on Philippians 3:12-14: "Striving to Be Like Christ." I leaned into a pitch, took one for the team, in order to get on base. The presentation did not reflect my level of preparation. Thank God his grace is sufficient and his strength is made perfect in our weakness.
Next Sunday's text: Philippians 3:15-16.
Praise God for those who received Christ and were added to the church.
Sunday afternoon, our sister church - The Bethel Institutional Baptist Church - joined us in worship. It was a privilege to have Drs. Rudolph McKissick Jr. & Sr. and the good people of the Bethel family to celebrate God's goodness with us. The Bethel praise team and choir lifts our hearts in praise. And my friend and brother, Pastor McKissick Jr., ministered a great word from Mark 2:1-11 - "The Right Kind of Noise."
Thank you, Shiloh, for your prayers, kindness, and encouragement. Your expressions of love have uplifted me in more ways that I can express.
I love you. And I daily thank the Lord for the wonderful privilege and sacred duty of being your pastor-teacher.
May the Lord grant us many years together to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ and to advance the kingdom of God on earth in this generation!

Notes from Sunday - 10/11/09
Today was a warm, beautiful day in Jacksonville. And the Lord blessed us with a wonderful day of worship at Shiloh.
I am grateful for all the guests who were in worship with us today.
In new members class, I taught on "What Shiloh Expects From You." I plan to list the seven points of the lesson in a post later this week.
Our choir sang up a storm today. It was rich. And the pre-message solo really set the tone for the preaching of the word.
Our elementary choir also led us in music today. As always, I praise God for the participation of our children in worship.
This month, I am preaching on financial stewardship and Christian generosity. I preached today a message on 1 Chronicles 29:10-19. I called the message: "A Godly Attitude Toward Material Possessions."
I paced myself much better a 8 than I did at 10. I was excited about the material in both services. But my heart was really full at 10 AM and I preached much harder than I intended to. What a mighty God we serve!
Next Sunday's Sermon: "Worship Through Giving" (Malachi 3:6-12).
Praise God for the new members who were added to our church family today.
This weekend, we funeralized Deacon William Hamp. He was 98 years old and had been a member of Shiloh for more than 60 years. He has served the Lord at Shiloh in countless ways. And he will be missed by many. Please pray for his widow, family, and for the entire Shiloh Church family.
The Cowboys pulled out a 26-20 overtime victory today over the Chiefs.
The Seahawks beat the Jaguars like they stole something!

Notes from Sunday - 10/04/09
I love first Sundays. The celebration of the Lord's Supper is a special time in the life of our congregation. Today was no different.
I am grateful for our deacons and deaconess who serve quietly and diligently to make the Lord's Supper (and baptism) a meaningful time of worship and fellowship.
I was out of town last Sunday. So I think I was additionally excited about being in worship today with my own church family.
In my new members class, I taught on "What You Can Expect from Shiloh," sharing some of our fundamental doctrinal convictions and spiritual priorities. The time seemed to fly by this morning.
The choir really blessed us in both services today. I was greatly encouraged by the song, "Jesus Is A Rock In A Weary Land."<
I plan to preach on Financial stewardship and Christian generosity on Sunday mornings during the month of October. I began yesterday with a message from 2 Corinthians 8:1-5, entitled, "A Church Worth Talking About."
Point: A generous congregation is a church worth talking about.
In verse 4 of my text, Paul makes the point that our giving is not just a private matter. It is an issue of fellowship. I was very eager to make that point in my message. However, I left it out of both presentations of the message.
During my sermon in the second sermon, I said something that amused me to no end. Or maybe it was the way I said it. Either way, it took everything within me to hold it together. It happens.
It is said that someone sent Charles Spurgeon a letter complaining that he could not be a spiritual man because of he used humor in the pulpit. He replied by saying that the person would be more impressed with how spiritual he was if they knew how many humorous things he refrained from saying.
Praise God for those who were saved and added to our congregation today.

I spent this evening flying to Los Angeles. In the morning, I am scheduled to speak at The Master's College in Santa Clarita (President John MacArthur). I am also to do an afternoon session. Tomorrow evening, I am to speak at the Los Angeles Bible Training School (President Paul Felix). Tuesday morning, I am scheduled to speak at The Master's Seminary (President John MacArthur). Notes from Sunday - 09/27/09
I was in Chicago yesterday to preach the 5th pastoral anniversary services for Pastor Romell Williams and the Lilydale Progressive Missionary Baptist Church.
Romell and I have been friends for some time. I preached for his installation services six years ago. And have preached every year since then, last year being the exception. The day of his anniversary last year was my first Sunday as pastor of Shiloh. He graciously understood. Not every did when my schedule abruptly changed. It was a honor to be invited to be a part of this celebration again.
It was good to be with Romell and Lilydale again. He is a faithful preacher and the good shepherd. I am proud of him and rejoice for all that the Lord is doing in his life and ministry.
I was scheduled to preach for Dr. Steven Thurston’s live broadcast last night at New Covenant Baptist Church. But I was not able to do it. I lost my voice last Wednesday. And I have not regained it yet. It turned into a sore throat over the weekend. And after struggling through two sermons yesterday morning, my body really had all it could take. I appreciate Dr. Thurston’s understanding.
I read of a young Puritan who wore himself out. Literally. On his deathbed, his last words were, “The Lord has given me a message and a horse. I have killed the horse. My God, what shall happen to the message?” I am determined to take better care of my “horse” for the sake of the message the Lord has given me to declare.
I missed being in worship at Shiloh yesterday. But I understand that the Lord blessed the day of worship. Praise God.
Yesterday was only the second time this year that I have not preached at Shiloh on the Lord’s Day. And it continues an unbroken streak of Sunday preaching all year. I do not think that either of these realities is a good thing. The bow that is always drawn soon breaks. I hope to do a better job in 2010 in taking natural and needed break for the sake of prayer, study, and… (Wait for it.) rest.
The fourth Sunday of September last year was my first Sunday as pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church. I remember three things about it right of the bat. Natalie was really sick that morning. And Crystal had to take her to the hospital, while I went to preach. Likewise, I preached the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20). It was my subtle – or not so subtle – way of declaring right up front what I believe the mission of the church is all about. Thirdly, the congregation received me so warming. They really made me feel that they were glad to have me as their pastor. I am grateful that has not changed.

I thank the Lord for sending me to the loving congregation of the Shiloh Church. I am more than blessed to serve a congregation who loves the word of God and has a heart to see lost people saved through faith in Christ.
I pray that the Lord is using my leaders, teaching, and service for the spiritual good of the saints at Shiloh. I think it is still way to early to tell. May the Lord help me to persevere in guarding my lifestyle and doctrine to ensure my salvation and the salvation of those who hear me (1 Tim. 4:16).

Notes from Sunday - 09/20/09
My Saturday morning bled into my Sunday morning. Not a good thing.
It was a rainy morning here in Jacksonville. But I glad that many saints of SMBC pressed their way to worship anyway.
The musical praise in worship today was very uplifting. I am grateful for all who serve the Lord in our music department and worship team.
As I taught my new members class this morning, my mind and heart were on the importance of speaking the truth in love among brothers and sisters in Christ in the body-life of the local church.
Praise God for the one who was baptized today.
I preached from Philippians 3:10-11. A called the message, “A Consuming Passion to Know Christ.”
This is the second week in a row my entire sermon outline has changed between Friday and Saturday. I don’t know what the deal with that is. But I am glad that I pressed on again to find a way to say it that I was most comfortable with. For the records, sermons are always unfinished products.
I lost my voice ten minutes into my 8 AM sermon. That has not happened in months. I did what I always do in such situations. I kept preaching.
Praise the Lord for those who were added to our membership today.
